So a friend asked me the other day, why are you a photographer. That was a really tough question as it turned out. I really didn’t have a good answer for her. I think I said something like, “Cause I like to take pictures.” Funny right!
But that really got me to thinking about it. Years ago, 18 to be exact, I met my husband Scott. He had four boys, and they hunted a lot together. Most weekends he was gone all day with them. So one day I asked if I could go and would he teach me how to hunt. Well that started my hunting passion. Scott and I spend a lot of time in the outdoors hunting. I have seen some really beautiful places over the years. So about five years into my new passion, I wanted memories. I wanted to look at photographs of our hunts, and I wanted photographs of the beautiful places see could only see if you were willing to hike a while. Scott bought me a camera. It was a two megapixel little point and shoot. I realized after using it for a while that I had a good eye and really enjoyed capturing our memories. A few years later he bought me my first really good camera, a Nikon, of course.
So at that point I started taking photographs of landscapes, wildlife, flowers, birds…you name it, I was photographing it. Then one day an acquaintance asked to buy one of my photographs. I was thrilled. So I started selling my photographs on Fine Art America. I still have that website, and I still sell my photographs there.
Then another amazing thing happened. I had grandchildren. At this point, my photography, my passions, and my life collided. I wanted to take great photos of my grandkids. So I got online and started taking classes to learn about photographing people. Turns out, I’m really good at it.
Then friends started asking me to photograph their special events. I photographed a couple of weddings, a few newborns, an engagement, and then family portraits. I started getting busy photographing for friends and decided, this is way to make extra income and do something I truly love.
That is pretty much a long story short and the birth of Red Ryak Photography. I love capturing my life’s special moments and the special moments of your lives. I take great pleasure is watching a mother’s face when I show her the newborn photographs or her family portraits. It tugs at my heart strings to watch a groom get teary eyed when he sees his life partner walk down the aisle.
So now when I am asked ‘Why are you a photographer,’ I truly have an answer. It’s because life is precious. You can’t rewind a moment and live it over and over again. So what better way to remember and relive the special moments in your life?
